COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biology Major at Mount Allison requires a total of 60 credits, designed to provide a strong foundation in biological sciences while integrating supporting knowledge from chemistry, physics, mathematics, and related disciplines. Students begin with 6 credits in introductory biology courses, including BIOL 1001 and 1501, establishing a broad understanding of cellular and organismal biology. Foundational courses in physics (3 credits from PHYS 1051 or 1041), mathematics (3 credits from MATH 1111 or 1151, and 3 credits from MATH 1121, 1251, 1311, 2211, 2221, or COMP 163), and chemistry (3 credits from CHEM 1001) complement the biology core, ensuring students develop quantitative, analytical, and experimental skills essential for scientific inquiry. Additional courses include 3 credits in biochemistry (BIOC 1001) and 18 credits in intermediate-level biology courses, such as BIOL 2101, 2201, 2301, 2401, 2701, 2811, and BIOC 2001, covering areas like ecology, genetics, evolution, and organismal form and function. To achieve depth in the discipline, students complete 12 credits of upper-level biology courses at the 3000/4000 level, with up to 6 credits permitted from related courses in biochemistry, psychology, data science, or general science electives. This structure ensures that Biology Majors acquire both breadth and specialization, preparing them for advanced study, research, or professional careers in the biological sciences.
