COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) at Mount Allison is designed to cultivate students’ creative abilities across a range of artistic disciplines, including drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture, with a primary emphasis on hands-on studio work. The program provides instruction in the principles of design, techniques, and the use of various media, allowing students to develop both technical skill and personal artistic expression. Complementing studio practice, the curriculum incorporates illustrated lectures and seminar courses in art history, which enhance artistic judgment and develop students’ abilities to critically analyze, write about, and discuss works of art. This combination of practical and theoretical study ensures that graduates are not only proficient in creating art but also capable of engaging thoughtfully with its cultural, historical, and conceptual contexts. The BFA program requires the completion of 120 credits, divided into 72 credits in Fine Arts studio courses, 24 credits in Art History, and 24 credits in electives, giving students the flexibility to explore interdisciplinary interests or deepen their knowledge in specialized areas. By balancing intensive studio training with critical and historical study, the BFA program equips students with the skills, knowledge, and intellectual versatility needed to pursue careers as professional artists, educators, curators, arts administrators, or further graduate studies in the visual arts.
