COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours program in Sociology at Mount Allison requires the completion of 66 credits and offers three distinct options—Thesis, Course, and Applied—each building on the foundational 39 credits of the Major. In the Thesis Option, students complete 21 additional credits in Sociology at the 2000-, 3000-, and 4000-levels, including at least 6 credits at the 3000- or 4000-level, and undertake 6 credits of SOCI 4990, a supervised research thesis that develops independent research, analytical, and writing skills. The Course Option emphasizes advanced coursework, requiring 27 additional credits in Sociology at the 2000-, 3000-, and 4000-levels, including at least 12 credits at the 3000- or 4000-level, of which at least 6 must be at the 4000-level, allowing for in-depth study of theoretical perspectives, analytical methods, and specialized sociological topics. The Applied Option combines 12 additional credits in Sociology at the 2000-, 3000-, or 4000-level with 12 credits from applied courses such as SOCI 3601–3791, and 3 credits from SOCI 4311 or 4971, emphasizing practical skills and experiential learning in applied sociology. Across all options, the Honours program cultivates critical thinking, advanced research capabilities, and practical application of sociological knowledge, preparing graduates for professional careers in social services, policy, research, and community development, or for further graduate study.
