COURSE CURRICULUM

An Honours in Political Science requires the completion of 72 credits and is offered in two options: Course or Thesis. Both options build on the foundational POLS 1001 course (3 credits) and emphasize advanced study across the discipline. In the Course Option, students complete 57 credits in Political Science at the 2000-, 3000-, or 4000-level, with a requirement that at least six credits at the 3000- or 4000-level be taken in each of the four core sub-fields: Political Theory (30/40 series), Canadian Politics (31/41 series), Comparative Politics (32/42 series), and International Politics (33/43 series), ensuring comprehensive coverage and depth of knowledge. Additionally, 12 credits are drawn from complementary courses in Arts & Letters, Humanities, and Social Sciences, chosen in consultation with the Program Advisor, to provide interdisciplinary perspectives and contextual understanding. The Thesis Option follows a similar structure but includes 6 credits of POLS 4990, allowing students to undertake an independent research project under faculty supervision, fostering research skills, critical analysis, and scholarly writing. Both options equip students with advanced analytical, research, and communication abilities, preparing them for careers in government, law, international relations, policy analysis, advocacy, and academic research, while cultivating a nuanced understanding of political systems, theory, and practice in both national and global contexts.
