COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours program in Philosophy is a comprehensive 72-credit course of study, designed for students seeking an advanced and rigorous engagement with philosophical inquiry. It builds on the Major in Philosophy, requiring 42 credits equivalent to those in the first five components of the Major, including foundational courses from the Humanities 1600 series, PHIL 2611, 2000-level Philosophy courses, and core courses such as PHIL 3000, 3011, 3101, 3221, 3231, 3240, 3250, 3301, 3311, 3351, and 3891. Beyond this foundation, the Honours program includes 3 credits from PHIL 3631, offering specialized study in advanced topics, and 6 credits from PHIL 4990, the Honours thesis course, which emphasizes independent research, critical analysis, and scholarly writing under close faculty supervision. Additionally, students complete 21 credits from 3000- or 4000-level Philosophy courses, selected in consultation with the Program Advisor to tailor the program to their specific interests and academic goals, allowing for deeper exploration of areas such as ethics, metaphysics, logic, political philosophy, or philosophy of science. This structure ensures a balance between breadth and depth, equipping students with advanced analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, preparing them for graduate study, academic careers, or other fields that demand rigorous reasoning and reflective insight.
