COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours program in History at Mount Allison is designed to provide students with advanced knowledge, research skills, and opportunities for in-depth study. The Honours program, whether following the Thesis Option or the Course Option, requires a total of 69 credits. Both options begin with 39 credits drawn from the foundational courses in the History major, ensuring students have a solid grounding in historical methods, critical analysis, and a broad understanding of key periods, regions, and themes. In the Thesis Option, students complete an additional 15 credits in History at the 3/4000 level, undertake 6 credits in HIST 4990, and 3 credits in HIST 4901, 4911, or 4921, alongside 16 credits at the 4000 level chosen in consultation with a Program Advisor, allowing for substantial independent research culminating in a thesis. The Course Option similarly includes 15 credits at the 3/4000 level, 3 credits in HIST 4901, 4911, or 4921, and 12 credits at the 4000 level, selected with guidance from the Program Advisor, but focuses on advanced coursework rather than a thesis. Both pathways provide rigorous training in historical scholarship, fostering analytical thinking, research proficiency, and scholarly communication, preparing graduates for careers in academia, law, public service, policy, and other fields requiring critical understanding of historical contexts.
