COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours program in Geography at Mount Allison builds upon the Major, providing students with an advanced, research-focused curriculum totaling 72 credits. Students first complete the 60 credits required for the Major, which include foundational courses in human and physical geography, core courses such as GENV 1201, 2101, 2201, 2221, 2811, HIST 2301, and selected courses at the 3/4000 level, as well as complementary courses chosen in consultation with the Program Advisor to enhance interdisciplinary learning. Beyond the Major, the Honours program requires an additional 12 credits, emphasizing independent research and advanced study. Six credits are earned through GENV 4990, a capstone or research project that allows students to apply geographic theory and methods to a focused research question under the guidance of faculty, developing skills in spatial analysis, critical thinking, and scholarly communication. The remaining six credits are chosen from Geography and Environment courses at the 3/4000 level, including at least three credits at the 4000 level, enabling students to further specialize in areas such as environmental management, GIS, urban planning, or cultural geography. The program is designed to prepare students for graduate studies, professional careers, and roles that require advanced analytical, research, and applied geographic expertise, combining rigorous academic training with practical, real-world skills.
