COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours program in French at Mount Allison requires 66 credits and offers both thesis and course options, providing advanced study in French language, literature, and culture. In both options, students begin with 9 credits of foundational courses (FREN 1801, 1811, 1821, 2801) and 9 credits at the intermediate level (FREN 2401, 2501, 2601), followed by 12 credits of upper-level courses (FREN 3101, 3111, 3131, 4001) and 3 credits in linguistics (LING 2001, 3001, 3011) to strengthen analytical and linguistic skills. The core of the program involves 27–33 credits from advanced 3000- and 4000-level French courses, ensuring coverage across five essential areas: at least 6 credits from 17th and 18th-century literature (FREN 3301, 3401, 3411), at least 3 credits from 19th-century literature (FREN 3501, 3511), 3 credits from 20th-century literature (FREN 3601, 3611, 3621), 3 credits in French-Canadian literature (FREN 3761, 3771), and 3 credits in theoretical and cultural studies (FREN 3801, 3811, 3871). The thesis option includes an additional 6-credit research project (FREN 4990, Mémoire), while the course option substitutes these credits for further advanced coursework. Both pathways equip students with sophisticated language proficiency, critical and cultural analysis skills, and comprehensive knowledge of French and francophone literatures, preparing graduates for academic research, professional careers, or further graduate studies in French and related disciplines.
