COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours program in Women’s and Gender Studies at Mount Allison University requires the completion of 72 credits, building upon the 60-credit Major to provide students with advanced, research-focused study in the field. Students begin by completing all major requirements, which include foundational courses in feminist theory, gender studies, and critical approaches to social justice, as well as intermediate and advanced courses that explore the intersections of gender with race, class, sexuality, ability, religion, ethnicity, age, and colonialism. Beyond the Major, Honours students take an additional three credits from advanced WGST courses such as 4001, 4301, 4811, 4950, 4951, or 4991, allowing for deeper engagement in specialized topics or research. They also complete three credits from WGST 4901 or 4911, courses designed to emphasize independent research, critical inquiry, and scholarly writing skills. The program culminates with six credits from WGST 4990, typically a thesis or major research project, which provides students with the opportunity to design and conduct original research under faculty supervision. Through this structure, the Honours program equips students with advanced analytical, research, and communication skills, preparing them for graduate studies, academic or policy careers, and professional work that addresses complex issues of gender, social justice, and equity in diverse contexts.
