COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours Program in English at Mount Allison University is designed for students with a strong interest and aptitude in the discipline, offering two pathways—Course Option and Thesis Option—both requiring 66 credits. For the Course Option, students complete 42 credits as outlined in the first four lines of the Major, including ENGL 2211, followed by 3 credits from ENGL 3871, 6 credits from a senior English seminar at the 4000 level, and 15 credits from English courses at the 3000/4000 level. The Thesis Option similarly begins with 42 credits from the Major, including ENGL 2211, then 3 credits from ENGL 3871, 6 credits from ENGL 4990 as a research-intensive thesis course, and 15 credits from English at the 3000/4000 level. Students are encouraged to exceed the minimal course requirements to gain broader coverage of the field, with core selections often including Shakespeare courses and at least one course in Canadian literature. Admission into the Honours Program typically occurs in January of the year in which students achieve third-year standing, in consultation with the Honours Coordinator. This program emphasizes advanced literary study, critical analysis, research skills, and independent inquiry, preparing students for graduate studies or careers requiring strong communication, analytical, and interpretive abilities, while fostering a comprehensive understanding of literature across historical periods, genres, and cultural contexts.
