COURSE CURRICULUM

The Classical Studies Honours program at Mount Allison University is designed for students seeking an advanced, in-depth study of ancient Greek and Roman civilizations, their languages, literature, history, and cultural influence. The program requires a total of 72 credits, beginning with 12 credits in introductory language courses, including LATI 1001, 1101, and GREK 1001, 1101, which provide a foundation in Latin and Greek. Students then complete 6 credits at the intermediate level (LATI 2001, 2101, GREK 2001, 2101) to build proficiency and prepare for advanced study. The program includes an additional 6 credits in 3000- or 4000-level Greek or Latin courses, or the specialized CLAS 4950/4951 courses, offering opportunities for intensive linguistic, literary, or historical analysis. The remaining 48 credits focus on advanced coursework in Classics, Greek, and Latin, of which at least 33 credits must be at the 3/4000 level, ensuring a rigorous and comprehensive engagement with classical texts, ideas, and cultures. Throughout the Honours program, students develop critical thinking, analytical, and research skills, gaining the ability to interpret primary texts, understand historical contexts, and explore the cultural and philosophical foundations of Western civilization. The program provides excellent preparation for graduate studies, teaching, research, and careers in areas requiring strong analytical and communication skills.
