COURSE CURRICULUM

The Canadian Studies program at Mount Allison University engages students with pressing contemporary issues, including diversity, community, cultural literacy, and national identities, through a Canadian-centered interdisciplinary lens. In first year, students take introductory courses that explore contemporary Canadian issues, institutions, and the development of Canadian culture and identity, providing a foundational understanding of the country’s social, political, and cultural landscape. In second year, course options expand to examine cultural diversity, media and popular culture, regionalism, and Canadian foodways, allowing students to explore how cultural practices and societal structures shape Canadian life. Third-year courses offer more specialized studies, including gender in Canada, Canadian-American relations, and contemporary social and political issues, fostering critical analysis and research skills. In the fourth year, students have the opportunity to pursue independent studies, participate in seminars, and engage in advanced coursework such as the Culture of the Maritimes, Aboriginal Political and Legal Issues, and Imagining Canada, which deepen knowledge of regional, historical, and Indigenous perspectives. Across all years, the program emphasizes analytical thinking, research, and communication, preparing students for careers in public service, education, media, cultural institutions, policy research, or further academic study.
