COURSE CURRICULUM

The Honours in American Studies at Mount Allison University requires the completion of 78 credits, building upon the foundation of the 60-credit Major. In addition to the core courses that cover American history, literature, geography, and culture, honours students complete 6 credits from either HIST 4990 or ENGL 4990, which typically involve an independent research project or thesis that allows for in-depth exploration of a specialized topic within American Studies. Students also take an additional 12 credits selected from advanced 3000- or 4000-level courses such as ECON 3501, 3711, ENGL 3731, 3741, 3921, 3931, 4701, 4951, HIST 3511, 4951, INLR 3101, 4301, POLS 3211, 3331, and SOCI 3431 or 3451, or other upper-level courses approved by the Program Coordinator. These courses enable students to deepen their expertise in areas such as American politics, economics, social structures, and cultural expression. The honours program emphasizes critical thinking, research, and interdisciplinary analysis, preparing students for graduate study or professional careers that require advanced knowledge of American society and its global impact. Through this rigorous program, students gain strong analytical and writing skills alongside a nuanced understanding of the United States’ historical and contemporary significance.
