COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sociology program at Mount Allison helps students develop a nuanced perspective on society by examining it from multiple viewpoints and within diverse social, cultural, and historical contexts. Students explore a wide range of topics, including social class and inequality, race and racialization, gender relations, youth culture, work and society, media and popular culture, health and illness, education, citizenship and identity, refugees, social policies, non-profit organizations, criminology, and research methods. First- and second-year courses provide a comprehensive overview of the discipline and an introduction to sociological analysis, encouraging students to engage with social problems through interactive class discussions, assignments, and experiential learning. In third-year courses, students focus on theoretical approaches, analytical methods, and their application to major areas of interest, building critical thinking, analytical, and writing skills while deepening their understanding of sociological theory. By the fourth year, students undertake more independent and in-depth study, engaging with complex sociological issues and developing advanced research, interpretation, and argumentation skills. This progression allows students to synthesize theoretical knowledge with empirical investigation, preparing them to critically analyze social phenomena, evaluate policies, and contribute meaningfully to discussions on social change. Graduates are well-equipped for careers in public policy, social services, education, research, and related fields, as well as for graduate study in sociology or interdisciplinary social sciences.
