COURSE CURRICULUM

A Major in Religious Studies at Mount Allison requires the completion of 60 credits, providing students with a comprehensive foundation in the study of religion while encouraging interdisciplinary exploration. The program begins with 6 credits from the Humanities 1600 series, establishing a broad understanding of humanistic approaches and critical thinking skills. Students then complete 9 credits from a selection of core Religious Studies courses, including RELG 2401, 2411, 2521, 2801, 2811, 2821, 2831, and 2841, which introduce key concepts, texts, and traditions across various religious streams. Further specialization is achieved through courses such as RELG 3901 (3 credits), RELG 3001 or 3101 (3 credits), RELG 3301 or 3311 (3 credits), and 6 credits from RELG 3501, 3601, or 3701, allowing focused study in areas of interest. Upper-level study comprises 12 credits of 3000- and 4000-level Religious Studies courses, with at least 6 credits at the 4000 level, enabling in-depth analysis and engagement with advanced scholarship. Complementing these core courses, students complete 18 credits from related disciplines in Arts and Letters, Humanities, and Social Sciences, chosen in consultation with the Program Advisor; up to 6 of these credits may include additional 2000-level Religious Studies courses if the Humanities 1600 series credits were taken in other disciplines. This integrated curriculum equips students with critical, analytical, and interdisciplinary skills, preparing them for careers in research, education, public service, and fields requiring cultural literacy.
