COURSE CURRICULUM

A Major in Political Science requires the completion of 60 credits, designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of political systems, theories, and practices. The program begins with POLS 1001 (3 credits), which introduces foundational concepts and analytical approaches in political science. Students then complete 39 credits of Political Science courses at the 2000-, 3000-, or 4000-level, with 6 to 9 of these credits permitted at the 2000 level. Within this framework, students must take at least three credits at the 3000- or 4000-level in each of the four core sub-disciplines: Political Theory (30/40 series), Canadian Politics (31/41 series), Comparative Politics (32/42 series), and International Politics (33/43 series), ensuring both breadth and depth of study across the field. In addition to these core courses, 18 credits are drawn from complementary courses in Arts & Letters, Humanities, and Social Sciences, selected in consultation with the Program Advisor, allowing students to contextualize political analysis within broader social, cultural, and intellectual frameworks. This integrated curriculum equips students with critical thinking, research, and communication skills, preparing them to analyze political phenomena, evaluate policies, and engage effectively in civic and professional life. By combining theoretical, empirical, and interdisciplinary approaches, the Political Science major fosters both intellectual growth and practical competence for careers in government, law, international relations, advocacy, and research.
