COURSE CURRICULUM

The Music Major at Mount Allison University requires 60 credits and is designed to provide a comprehensive foundation in both practical and theoretical aspects of music. Students begin with 12 credits from introductory courses including MUSC 1101, 1201, 1221, and 1703, which establish essential skills in music theory, aural skills, and musicianship. This is followed by 9 credits from courses such as MUSC 1111, 1211, 2101, 2111, 2121, 2201, and 2211, allowing students to advance their knowledge in core musical studies. Ensemble participation is a key component of the program, with 3 credits earned through MUSC 1619–4619, 1629–4629, 1639–4639, 1649–4649, 1659–4659, 1669–4669, 1689–4689, or 1699–4699, giving students hands-on experience in collaborative performance. In addition, 6 credits are taken from Music courses at the 2000, 3000, or 4000 level, while 12 credits come from advanced Music courses at the 3/4000 level, allowing for focused study in areas such as performance, theory, composition, or music history. The remaining 18 credits are chosen from complementary courses in Arts and Letters or Humanities, with at least 6 credits at the 3/4000 level, ensuring students gain a well-rounded liberal arts education alongside their musical training.
