COURSE CURRICULUM

Mount Allison University, the Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures program is designed for students seeking advanced proficiency in two languages along with a foundational understanding of a third. As a major, students select Language #1 (33 credits) in either French or Spanish, Language #2 (24 credits) in French, Spanish, or German, and Language #3 (12 credits) in French, Spanish, German, or Japanese. Beginning with introductory or intermediate-level courses, depending on prior experience, students progress to advanced language studies while exploring the rich literary, cinematic, and cultural traditions associated with their chosen languages. The program also introduces the fundamentals of linguistics, helping students understand the structure and evolution of language itself. Throughout their studies, students gain not only linguistic fluency but also a deep appreciation for global cultural diversity and artistic expression. In their fourth year, they have the opportunity to engage in independent studies in French, German, or Spanish, allowing them to focus on specific areas of interest under faculty guidance. This comprehensive program prepares graduates for diverse careers in translation, international relations, education, tourism, and global business, while also equipping them with analytical, communicative, and intercultural skills essential for success in today’s interconnected world.
