COURSE CURRICULUM

Mount Allison, the History program offers students a rich and diverse array of courses that span major periods and regions, including Canadian, American, European, and Asian history, allowing for highly individualized programs of study. From the very first year, students can engage with specialized topics rather than beginning solely with introductory courses, exploring the human experience in all its complexity through themes such as class and gender, wealth and poverty, faith and science, self and social identity, government and politics, and war and peace. The program emphasizes both breadth and depth, encouraging critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and effective communication as students examine historical events, movements, and ideas from multiple perspectives. As students progress, the number and variety of courses expand, with third-year offerings providing the greatest selection, enabling deeper engagement with particular interests or regions. In fourth year, opportunities for independent studies allow students to pursue specialized topics not covered in the regular curriculum, fostering original research, self-directed learning, and scholarly inquiry.
