COURSE CURRICULUM

The French major at Mount Allison requires 60 credits and is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of the French language, literature, and culture. Students begin with foundational courses in French language, including FREN 1801, 1811, 1821, and 2801, which develop essential skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Intermediate-level courses, such as FREN 2401, 2501, and 2601, build on this foundation, enhancing linguistic competence and preparing students for advanced study. Upper-year courses focus on specialized literature and culture topics, with 12 credits drawn from FREN 3101, 3111, 3131, and 4001, and 15 credits at the 3000 level covering at least four of five key areas: 17th and 18th-century literature, 19th-century literature, 20th-century literature, French Canada, and theoretical and cultural studies. Students are encouraged to take courses from each area to gain a well-rounded perspective on French and francophone cultures. An additional 18 credits are earned through complementary courses in other languages, modern literatures, arts and letters, or humanities, with particular recommendations including HIST 1661 and LING 2001, 3001, and 3111. This combination ensures that graduates develop not only advanced French language skills but also critical, analytical, and cultural competencies that prepare them for diverse academic and professional opportunities.
