COURSE CURRICULUM

The Major in American Studies at Mount Allison University consists of 60 credits designed to provide an interdisciplinary understanding of the United States. Students begin with 3 credits from ENGL 1201 and continue with 9 credits from courses such as ENGL 2701, 3711, and 3721, which focus on American literature and cultural expression. They also complete 3 credits from GENV 3301, examining the geographical and environmental aspects of American development, and 12 credits from history courses including HIST 1601 and 2521, which explore major periods in American history from its colonial roots to the modern era. The remaining 33 credits are chosen from a wide range of electives across disciplines such as economics, English, fine arts, geography, history, industrial relations, political science, religious studies, and sociology. These electives allow students to focus on themes like politics, economics, art, or social movements in the U.S. This flexible and comprehensive structure enables students to develop a deep and critical understanding of American society, culture, and history while honing analytical, research, and communication skills valuable for further academic study or careers in education, public policy, media, and related fields.
