COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sustainable Innovation diploma at Medicine Hat College spans two years and five semesters, blending theory, hands-on learning, and workplace experience to equip students with the tools needed to lead regenerative change across industries. In Year One, Term 1 introduces students to foundational skills with courses like ENGL 110 (Technical Communications), SUST 111 (Creativity and Changing Perspectives), SUST 112 (Introduction to Social Innovation), SUST 113 (Regenerative Design), and SUST 114 (Sustainability & Systems Thinking), which collectively provide a strong base in communication, innovation, and systems thinking. Term 2 builds on this knowledge with SUST 121 (Sustainability & Modelling), SUST 122 (Building and Sustaining Innovative Organizations), SUST 123 (Building Community), SUST 124 (Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility), and SUST 129 (Sustainability by Design), allowing students to explore the application of sustainable concepts in organizational and community settings. In Year Two, Term 3, the focus shifts to data, finance, and strategy with CPSC 151 (Data Modelling), FINA 161 (Principles of Sustainable Finance), SUST 212 (Design Thinking), and SUST 213 (Strategic Management and Innovation Elective), along with a choice between GLGY 111 (Principles of Geoscience) or MKTG 141 (Sustainable Marketing). Term 4 deepens this understanding through GEOG 191 (Ecosystems and Environmental Change), MGMT 181 (Sustainable Operations), SUST 222 (Innovation and Strategic Implementation), and SUST 229 (Sustainable Innovation Project), plus an elective choice between PHYS 101 (How Things Work) or MGMT 171 (Sustainable Innovation and Entrepreneurship). Finally, in Term 5, students complete SUST 299 (Sustainable Innovation Work-Integrated Learning), applying their accumulated knowledge in a practical, real-world setting. This rigorous and holistic curriculum prepares graduates to become impactful leaders in sustainability, ready to tackle global and local challenges through innovation, collaboration, and regenerative thinking.
