COURSE CURRICULUM

The Social Work diploma program spans two years and is structured to provide a comprehensive education combining theory, practice, and field experience. In the first year, the fall semester includes courses such as Contemporary Indigenous Issues in Canada, Introductory Communications for Helping Professionals, Introduction to Psychology II – Social Science, Introduction to Social Work Practice, and Social Problems & Policies. These courses lay the foundational knowledge essential for understanding diverse social contexts and developing professional communication skills. During the winter semester, students deepen their understanding with Developmental Psychology, Social Work Theories & Practice, Social Work with Individuals, Social Work with Groups, and an elective, offering a balanced mix of theory and practical application. The spring semester allows flexibility for students to complete a junior-level English course and another elective, with the option to adjust their course load after consulting with an advisor. In the second year, the fall semester focuses on advanced topics such as Human Development, Evidence-based Practice in Social Work—which integrates research, leadership, and Indigenous ways of knowing—Social Work with Families, and Social Work Practicum I, providing valuable hands-on experience. An optional course, International Social Work, is also available. The winter semester continues with Social Work with Communities, Social Work with Mental Health, Trauma and Addictions, Social Work Practicum II, and an elective, further preparing students for diverse social work roles. Finally, the program offers an optional spring semester International Social Work Practicum, giving students a chance to gain global experience. This program balances classroom learning with fieldwork, enabling students to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to serve individuals, families, groups, and communities effectively in a variety of social work settings.
