COURSE CURRICULUM

The Power Engineering diploma program is structured over two years with progressive blocks designed to build both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. In the first year, Block 1 (September to November) includes courses such as PLAB 116, which is the first lab, PLAC 111 work practicum, and foundational courses like POWE 161 covering introductory mechanics, thermodynamics, legislation, and safety, POWE 162 focusing on introductory electricity, instrumentation, materials, welding, and safety, and POWE 163 which introduces boilers, environmental concerns, and communication. Students must obtain safety certifications, including Standard First Aid with CPR and WHMIS, to be eligible for the work practicum PLAC 111. Block 2 (December to February) continues with PLAB 117 second lab and courses such as POWE 166 on lubrication, pumps, compressors, boiler safety and operation, POWE 167 which covers maintenance, water treatment, prime movers, engines, and auxiliary building systems, and POWE 168 on refrigeration, air conditioning, and types of plants. Block 3 (February to May) includes PLAB 118 third lab and more advanced courses: POWE 151 intermediate mechanics and thermodynamics, POWE 152 metallurgy, POWE 153 codes and drawings, and POWE 154 intermediate electricity and instrumentation. In the second year, Block 4 (September to December) has PLAB 219 fourth lab and courses such as POWE 260 intermediate boilers, POWE 261 intermediate prime movers, and POWE 262 water treatment and special equipment. Finally, Block 5 (January to April) offers advanced level courses including POWE 265 advanced boilers, POWE 266 advanced pumps and water treatment, POWE 270 advanced codes, POWE 271 plant installation and management, POWE 272 advanced mechanics, POWE 280 advanced thermodynamics, and POWE 281 advanced metallurgy, providing students with comprehensive expertise to prepare for a career in power engineering.
