COURSE CURRICULUM

The Criminal Justice Diploma program at Medicine Hat College is designed over two years, offering a comprehensive curriculum that prepares students for diverse careers within the criminal justice system. In the first year, the fall semester introduces students to foundational courses such as Introduction to Criminal Justice, Theories of Crime, Criminal Law and the Judicial Process, along with Psychology and a communication elective. The winter semester builds on this foundation with courses in Policing and Law Enforcement, Corrections and Offender Rehabilitation, Young Persons in Conflict with the Law, Introductory Communications for Helping Professionals, and Introductory Sociology.The second year advances students’ knowledge and skills with courses addressing contemporary issues in criminal justice, criminal investigations, conflict management, crisis intervention, and public safety including emergency planning and response. The winter semester emphasizes professional ethics, mental health, legal evidence and trial presentation, and leadership development. Students also complete general electives to broaden their perspective.Elective options include communication courses like Introductory Report Writing and Speech or Introductory Composition, and general electives such as Contemporary Indigenous Issues in Canada, Death and Dying, Introduction to Wellness, Fitness and Nutrition, Introduction to Nutrition, Social Psychology, and Current Social Issues. This varied curriculum ensures students develop critical thinking, effective communication, leadership, and ethical reasoning skills essential for success in criminal justice professions. The program’s balance of theory, practical skills, and general education prepares graduates to meet the demands of policing, corrections, court services, and community safety roles.
