COURSE CURRICULUM

The Child and Youth Care Counsellor program spans two years, with coursework and practicums designed to prepare students for professional roles supporting vulnerable children, youth, and families. In the first year, the fall semester introduces students to the profession through CYCC 111, alongside foundational courses in communications, psychology, movement activities, and English. A unique aspect is the required 1.5-day retreat fostering community and self-awareness among students. The winter semester focuses on practical experience with Practicum I (CYCC 120), while also covering counselling fundamentals, working with vulnerable populations, developmental psychology, microcomputer skills, and additional English studies. In the second year, the fall semester deepens practical and theoretical knowledge with Practicum II (CYCC 230), courses on legal and cultural issues, group facilitation, youth care practice with families, and human development psychology. The winter semester includes Practicum III (CYCC 240), with courses addressing mental health and substance abuse, assessment and intervention strategies, and abnormal psychology. Throughout the program, students engage in hands-on learning via practicums in community settings, applying skills directly in their work with children and youth. This combination of theory, practical skills, and community engagement ensures students are well-prepared for their careers. The curriculum also emphasizes understanding cultural, legal, and psychological aspects relevant to child and youth care. Overall, the program blends academic learning with experiential practice, supporting the development of compassionate, knowledgeable counsellors ready to meet the complex needs of at-risk populations.
