COURSE CURRICULUM

The Business Administration diploma program at Medicine Hat College begins with a common first year designed to provide students with a broad foundation in essential business principles. In the first semester, students take Introductory Accounting I (ACCT 111), Communication in the Workplace (COMM 140), Principles of Microeconomics (ECON 201), Management Theory (MGMT 161), and Business Problems Software Applications (MGMT 193). These courses introduce fundamental concepts in accounting, communication, economics, management, and practical software skills. The second semester builds on this foundation with Introductory Accounting II (ACCT 113), Advanced Business Communications (COMM 252), Principles of Macroeconomics (ECON 203), Human Resources Management (MGMT 243), and Marketing (MKTG 171), preparing students with knowledge in accounting, communication, economic systems, HR management, and marketing fundamentals. In the second year, students specializing in Financial Services take focused courses starting with Taxation (ACCT 219), Personal Investing (FNSV 210), Organizational Behaviour (MGMT 263), Business Statistics I (MGMT 284), and Business Law (MGMT 395) in semester three. These courses provide an understanding of tax regulations, investment strategies, behavior in organizations, business data analysis, and legal issues relevant to financial services. The fourth semester includes Finance (FINA 255), Canadian Investment Funds (FNSV 200), Business Integration (MGMT 268), Work Integrated Learning (MGMT 290), and Managing Marketing Relationships (MKTG 345), further enhancing students’ knowledge of financial markets, investment products, strategic business practices, practical work experience, and customer relationship management. This comprehensive curriculum equips students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed for careers in financial institutions such as banks, credit unions, and investment firms, while also offering transferable credits toward professional designations and university programs.
