COURSE CURRICULUM

The Administrative Office Management program at Medicine Hat College is a two-year program designed to develop comprehensive office and management skills alongside valuable workplace experience. In Year One, Term 1, students focus on foundational skills with courses such as APRO 108 Keyboarding/Desktop Publishing I, APRO 125 Office Communications I, APRO 135 Advanced Word & PowerPoint, APRO 140 Bookkeeping I, and APRO 167 Office Relations. These courses build essential office communication, technical, and interpersonal skills. Term 2 expands on these foundations with APRO 109 Keyboarding/Desktop Publishing II, APRO 137 Advanced Excel, APRO 145 Bookkeeping II, APRO 155 Office Communications II, APRO 190 Work Experience, and APRO 210 Payroll Compliance Legislation, offering practical application and exposure to real-world office settings. Upon completing the first year, students receive a certificate in Administrative Office Professional. In Year Two, Term 3, the curriculum shifts toward management and administrative leadership, with courses like APRO 200 Payroll Fundamentals I, MGMT 161 Management Theory, MGMT 220 Project Management, MGMT 243 Human Resources, and MKTG 171 Marketing. Term 4 continues this focus with APRO 220 Payroll Fundamentals II, MGMT 263 Organizational Behaviour, MGMT 267 Leadership Development, MKTG 251 Digital Design for Marketing, and an approved business elective such as COMM 140, COMM 250, FNSV 210, MGMT 395, or MKTG 345, depending on individual interests or career goals. Finally, Term 5 includes OMGT 235 Work Experience, a second unpaid placement that provides hands-on training in a professional setting. This well-rounded program prepares students to handle a variety of administrative functions and lead office teams effectively, making them competitive candidates for supervisory or office management roles upon graduation.
