COURSE CURRICULUM

The Health Care Aide program at Medicine Hat College is structured over two semesters, each lasting 16 weeks, designed to prepare students for a rewarding career as compassionate front-line caregivers. In Semester 1, students begin with HCAP 140, focusing on the Health Care Aide role and responsibilities, laying a foundation of professional expectations and ethical practices. They study the human body, health, and chronic illness in HCAP 141, gaining essential knowledge of common health conditions they will encounter. Communication and documentation skills critical to healthcare settings are covered in HCAP 142, while HCAP 143 teaches students how to provide person-centered care and comfort, emphasizing empathy and individualized support. This semester concludes with a clinical placement (HCAP 144), offering hands-on experience in a real healthcare environment to apply theory to practice. Semester 2 builds on this foundation with HCAP 145, addressing the management of complex care needs, preparing students for more advanced caregiving tasks. HCAP 146 introduces special activities designed for clients with various health conditions, promoting therapeutic engagement and quality of life. Students then participate in instructor-led clinical experience (HCAP 147), further developing practical skills under supervision. The program culminates in a consolidated clinical placement (HCAP 148), where students demonstrate their competency in diverse healthcare settings, preparing them for employment. Throughout both semesters, students develop critical clinical skills, professionalism, and compassionate care essential for success in healthcare roles.
