COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program at Medicine Hat College is a full-time professional program requiring students to follow a strict course sequence, with any deviation needing approval from academic leadership. In Year One, students take foundational courses including NRSG 202 Indigenous Health Studies, NRSG 201 Introduction to Nursing, BIO 275 and BIO 277 in Anatomy and Physiology, as well as required options such as English, Statistics (STAT 333 or 251), an Arts and Philosophy option, a junior science option, and a junior open option. Students are encouraged to complete their fourth-year open option during the spring term of Year One or Two. Year Two advances into core nursing subjects with NRSG 305 Microbiology and Biochemistry, NRSG 310 Foundations of Relationship, NRSG 320 and 350 on care of the aging adult, NRSG 321 and 351 on health promotion, NRSG 330 Nursing Amid Complexity, NRSG 331 Pathophysiology I, NRSG 332 Pharmacology I, and NRSG 352 Acute Care Nursing I Practicum. In Year Three, now under University of Calgary registration, students study NRSG 401 Evidence-Informed Nursing, NRSG 430 Pharmacology II, NRSG 450 Consolidated Practicum, and NRSG 530 Pathophysiology II in the fall. In the winter, they complete NRSG 410 Ethical Practice and NRSG 531 Pathophysiology III. Depending on cohort assignment, Group A focuses on mental health and acute care with corresponding practicums (NRSG 420, 421, 550, 551), while Group B studies perinatal and pediatric care (NRSG 520, 521, 552, 553). These group assignments switch in the fourth year. Semester seven includes NRSG 501 Nursing Leadership, the Group A or B course rotation, and an open option (OPTN 2xx). The final semester concludes with NRSG 510 Resilience in Practice and NRSG 560, the Final Preceptorship, preparing students for licensure and professional practice.
