COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Education – Elementary is a four-year baccalaureate program offered through a partnership between Mount Royal University and Medicine Hat College. The degree requires the completion of 40 courses, which include 20 core education courses—two of which are major practicum placements—along with eight minor courses in the humanities, six general education courses, and four electives. During the third and fourth years of the program, students engage in a comprehensive curriculum that includes seven Program of Studies and Curriculum Instruction in Teaching courses, four additional education-focused courses, and two intensive practicums. The specific courses taken during these years include EDUC 2200 - Special Topics in Education, EDUC 2375 - Effective Assessment - Measurement and Evaluation, EDUC 3010 - Practicum I, EDUC 3103 - Program of Studies and Curriculum Instruction in Teaching English Language Arts, EDUC 3104 - Arts Integration in Elementary Education, EDUC 3105 - Program of Studies and Curriculum Instruction in Teaching Physical Education, EDUC 3106 - Program of Studies and Curriculum Instruction in Teaching Science, EDUC 3108 - Program of Studies and Curriculum Instruction in Teaching Mathematics, EDUC 4030 - Practicum II, EDUC 4107 - Program of Studies and Curriculum Instruction in Teaching Social Studies, EDUC 4201 - Integrating Ideas, Values and Praxis, EDUC 4325 - The Impact of Social Issues in Education & Schooling, EDUC 4351 - Indigenous Perspectives in Education, and EDUC 4361 - Exceptional Students, Special Needs, & Inclusive Schooling. In addition to the two main practicums in Years 3 and 4, practical classroom experience is integrated into certain courses throughout the entire program. These embedded practicums provide hands-on learning opportunities in classrooms ranging from kindergarten to middle school. All practicum placements take place in Medicine Hat and the broader Southeastern Alberta region, giving students valuable local teaching experience while preparing them for careers in elementary education.
