COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Applied Health Science (Paramedic) program at MacEwan University provides a structured, progressive curriculum designed to develop highly skilled and adaptable paramedics. In the first year, students begin with foundational courses including the Paramedicine Driver Operator Course (APDOC) in the summer, followed by coursework in human anatomy and physiology, introductory communications for helping professionals, and the foundational principles of paramedic practice, including assessment, diagnostics, and emergency management. Students also engage in primary care practice courses during the spring semester, building essential hands-on skills. In the second year, the program advances to more specialized and applied content, including advanced care introduction, pharmacology, trauma and environmental condition management, pathophysiology, mental health for first responders, skills in patient modalities, management of special populations, bioethics, and advanced critical care practice, complemented by psychology and death and dying courses to enhance understanding of patient care in diverse contexts. The third year emphasizes the highest level of paramedic practice, with Advanced Care Paramedic Practice I and II, as well as advanced paramedic care, preparing students for complex, real-world emergency scenarios. The program balances theoretical knowledge with practical application, ensuring graduates are proficient in clinical skills, decision-making, ethical practice, and professional communication, fully equipped to meet the demands of prehospital and emergency care across diverse healthcare environments.
