COURSE CURRICULUM

The Speech Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA) diploma program is structured over two years and requires a total of 60 credits, combining foundational knowledge, specialized coursework, and practical experience to prepare graduates for work under the supervision of a speech-language pathologist. In the first year, students complete courses such as Curriculum II: Languages of Play (ECCS 155), Interpersonal Communication (INTD 105), Introduction to Human Language (LING 100), and Introductory Psychology (PSYC 104), alongside specialized courses in speech, language, and literacy development (THAS 101), communication disorders (THAS 102), the role and responsibilities of paraprofessionals in educational settings (THAS 104), and human development (THAS 115). University-level English, including WRIT 101, is also required to strengthen academic communication skills. The second year emphasizes applied therapeutic practice, beginning with Understanding and Supporting Student Behaviour (TAST 102) and progressing through a series of therapeutic intervention courses: Articulation and Phonology (THAS 201), Introduction to Clinical Role and Skills (THAS 202), Language (THAS 233), Clients with Concurrent Diagnoses (THAS 234), and Adult Populations (THAS 237). Field placements I and II (THAS 203 and 215) provide hands-on clinical experience in educational and healthcare settings, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge, develop professional skills, and gain confidence in working with diverse populations. Upon completion, graduates are prepared to support speech-language pathologists effectively across a range of therapeutic contexts.
