COURSE CURRICULUM

The Paralegal Studies program requires the completion of 60 credits, typically spread across 20 courses, designed to provide students with a comprehensive foundation in legal knowledge, office procedures, and professional skills necessary for a career in the legal field. Core courses cover essential topics such as analysis and argument, legal computing and procedures, financial procedures for law offices, and introductory accounting, ensuring students gain both practical and theoretical understanding of legal operations. Students also study the legal environment, business law, legal research and analysis, legal drafting, and information management procedures, equipping them to support lawyers and clients effectively. Specialized courses address areas of law such as criminal law, corporate procedures, civil litigation and dispute resolution, real estate transactions, creditor and debtor law, estate law, family law, and administrative law, providing exposure to a wide range of legal practice areas. The program includes a Paralegal Studies Practicum, giving students hands-on experience in a professional setting to apply their skills in real-world scenarios. Additionally, students complete four open electives from any subject, with senior-level paralegal courses recommended, allowing them to tailor their education to specific interests. Upon graduation, students are prepared for entry-level positions in law firms, corporate legal departments, government offices, and non-profit organizations, with the option to transfer into further studies such as MacEwan’s Bachelor of Commerce.
