COURSE CURRICULUM

The Library and Information Technology diploma requires the completion of 60 credits, or 20 courses, designed to provide a comprehensive foundation in information management and library services. Students begin with core courses such as Fluency with Information Technology, Analysis and Argument, and Libraries in the Information Age to develop essential technical and communication skills. They then advance to specialized courses, including Acquisition and Management of Collections, Organization of Information I, Information Services I and II, Records Management, Information Systems Design, and Information Services Management, which equip them with practical expertise in cataloguing, reference services, and database management. The curriculum also emphasizes the societal and human dimensions of the field through courses like Information and Society, Introductory Psychology II, and Introductory Sociology, helping students understand user needs and community contexts. Elective options and senior-level English courses enhance critical thinking, research, and communication skills, while field placement provides hands-on experience in professional settings, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge and build industry connections. Additional courses, such as Library Services for Children and Young Adults and choice electives, broaden students’ knowledge and versatility. Together, the program combines technical proficiency, organizational skills, and human-centered understanding to prepare graduates for careers in libraries, archives, records management, and information centers, or for further studies in related disciplines.
