COURSE CURRICULUM

The Hearing Instrument Practitioner program is a two-year comprehensive credential designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to support individuals with hearing loss. In the first year, students build a foundation in bioacoustics, human hearing, hearing testing, and hearing instrument technology, while also developing essential skills in customer relations, communication, and understanding hearing disorders. Practical components such as hearing testing labs and professional practice courses allow students to apply theoretical concepts in real-world scenarios, complemented by introductory aural rehabilitation training and university-level English to enhance professional communication. In the second year, the program advances to specialized topics including working with aging clients, business management, professional responsibilities, and counselling skills, ensuring students are prepared for the diverse demands of professional practice. Advanced hearing instrument technology courses, aural rehabilitation, and hearing testing provide technical expertise, while the field placement offers hands-on, supervised experience in professional settings. Electives allow for exploration of additional areas of interest, rounding out the program. By the end of the two years, students gain a thorough understanding of hearing science, device technology, client-centered care, and professional practice, enabling them to dispense hearing aids and assistive listening devices competently, support clients’ communication needs, and pursue successful careers in audiology, hearing instrument dispensing, or related healthcare fields.
