COURSE CURRICULUM

The Community Justice and Corrections diploma is a two-year program designed to equip students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for a career in criminal justice and correctional services. In the first year, students build a foundational understanding of the justice system through courses such as Criminal Justice System, Introductory Criminology, Introduction to Corrections, Correctional Interviewing, Restorative Justice, and Indigenous People and Justice in Canada, alongside essential studies in Interpersonal Communication, Sociology, Canadian Law and Justice, and University-level English. These courses provide a comprehensive grounding in the social sciences, legal frameworks, and communication skills critical for professional practice. In the second year, students advance their knowledge with courses focused on Diversity and Justice in Canada, Addiction in the Criminal Justice System, Selected Issues in Criminal Justice, Correctional Methods and Practice, Youth and Crime, and Correctional Counselling, while also completing two field placements that provide hands-on experience in correctional and community justice settings. Additional courses in Mental Health and Resiliency in Public Safety, as well as Introductory Psychology, further support students’ understanding of human behavior, mental health, and effective interventions. By integrating classroom learning with applied practice, this 60-credit program ensures graduates are prepared to pursue roles in correctional institutions, community-based programs, and other criminal justice settings, equipped with the skills, knowledge, and experience to succeed professionally.
