COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Honours program at MacEwan University is designed for students with a strong interest in mathematics who wish to explore the subject at an advanced and rigorous level. The program combines foundational, intermediate, and senior-level courses to provide a comprehensive understanding of mathematical theory and its applications. Core courses include Elementary and Intermediate Calculus, Linear Algebra, Geometry, Abstract Algebra, Ordinary Differential Equations, Real Analysis, Theory of Functions of a Complex Variable, and Analysis and Topology, ensuring that students develop both breadth and depth in mathematical knowledge. A hallmark of the Honours program is the completion of an independent research project through the Honours Thesis, in which students work closely with a faculty supervisor to investigate a mathematical problem, develop proofs, and present their findings in a formal thesis and oral defense. In addition to specific Honours requirements, students choose 18 to 39 credits of senior-level mathematics, which may include advanced statistics courses, allowing flexibility to tailor their studies toward their interests and career goals. The program also includes options for courses from Arts and Science or up to 18 out-of-faculty credits, providing a well-rounded academic experience. Upon completion, graduates are well-prepared for careers requiring strong analytical and problem-solving skills or for graduate studies in mathematics, statistics, or related fields.
