COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) at MacEwan University is a comprehensive program designed to prepare students for professional practice while equipping them with advanced skills in leadership, research, and education within nursing. Spanning four years, the curriculum integrates knowledge from nursing, the liberal arts, and sciences to provide a well-rounded understanding of health and well-being across diverse populations. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge in human anatomy, physiology, microbiology, psychology, Indigenous health, and introductory nursing practice, alongside self-leadership and critical thinking skills. The second year builds on this foundation with courses in pharmacotherapeutics, mental health nursing, integrated health assessment, and nursing practice across the lifespan, emphasizing strength-based care and leadership development. In the third year, students focus on healthy populations, organizational leadership, fundamentals of nursing research, and complex nursing care, with continued experiential learning in clinical practice settings. The final year emphasizes future directions in nursing, advanced leadership, transition readiness, and preceptorship, supported by senior electives to allow personalized learning. Across all years, students gain hands-on experience in classrooms, labs, clinical placements, and MacEwan’s Clinical Simulation Centre, fostering practical skills, critical thinking, and professional competence. Graduates are prepared to enter practice, lead teams, contribute to research, and deliver compassionate, evidence-informed care across healthcare settings.
