COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Data Science Major at MacEwan University requires the completion of 120 credits, combining core computer science, mathematics, statistics, data science, and business courses with electives and options to provide a comprehensive interdisciplinary education. Junior-level courses build foundational knowledge in computing, calculus, linear algebra, and applied statistics, alongside introductory data science courses in R, systems, and experimental design. Senior-level coursework deepens students’ expertise in data structures, file and database management, data visualization, advanced database topics, machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing, while senior mathematics and statistics courses cover optimization, probability, mathematical statistics, computational statistics, applied regression, and time series analysis. Business courses develop understanding in sustainable business, project management, operations management, and one additional introductory business course. Students may select up to six credits of major electives, including topics in artificial intelligence, numerical methods, applied data analysis, work-integrated learning, combinatorics, and scientific writing, allowing for tailored learning experiences. Additional breadth and option requirements enable students to choose from Arts and Science courses or up to 18 credits in out-of-faculty courses, fostering interdisciplinary exploration. This combination of theoretical foundations, practical skills, applied projects, and flexible electives prepares graduates to analyze, model, and interpret complex data, develop computational solutions, and apply insights to real-world problems across diverse sectors including technology, business, research, and analytics.
