COURSE CURRICULUM

The Studio Arts major in the Bachelor of Fine Arts at MacEwan University combines rigorous technical training, creative research, and interdisciplinary study to prepare students for professional contemporary art practice or graduate-level studies. The program includes foundational courses in drawing, painting, intermedia, three-dimensional spatial practice, digital foundations, and art history, alongside specialized courses such as museum and gallery management, professional practice, theory in contemporary art, and community engagement projects. Students also complete core English courses to strengthen critical thinking and communication skills, and courses exploring the arts in culture and First Peoples’ artistic traditions. Interdisciplinary options allow students to tailor their learning, while electives provide flexibility to explore additional areas of interest, with a requirement that at least six credits are completed at the senior level and a portion drawn from arts, communications, and performance disciplines. Program options offer further specialization, including the possibility of completing a minor, or selecting 18 to 21 credits from approved program courses. The culmination of the degree is the BFA Project, a comprehensive capstone that integrates conceptual, technical, and professional development.
