COURSE CURRICULUM

The Public Relations Major within the Bachelor of Communication Studies degree at MacEwan University is designed to provide students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for a career in public relations and strategic communication. The 87-credit program includes core courses such as Business Fundamentals for Communicators (PREL 213), Public Relations Fundamentals and Practice (PREL 230), Media Relations and Mass Media (PREL 233), Public Relations & Digital Media (PREL 238), Integrated Marketing Communications (PREL 240), Writing for Public Relations (PREL 241), Internal Communications and Organizational Dynamics (PREL 242), and Issues and Reputation Management (PREL 246), alongside advanced courses in Strategic Communication Planning (BCSC 310), Professional Field Placement and Practice (BCSC 395), Intercultural Communication (BCSC 400), Advanced Seminar in Journalism (BCSC 426), and Advanced Strategic Communication (BCSC 430). Students also complete 18 credits from their chosen minor, 21 credits of major-specific options based on the minor, and 24–27 credits of breadth requirements across Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, and Fine Arts/Performing Arts, with a minimum of nine senior-level credits. This combination ensures a well-rounded education, integrating critical thinking, ethical practice, digital communication, and professional experience.
