COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Communication Studies with a Professional Communication major requires the completion of 120 credits, combining core courses, major-specific courses, breadth requirements, a minor, and elective options to ensure a well-rounded education. The 36-credit core curriculum provides a comprehensive foundation in communication, including courses such as Grammar and Composition Foundations, Interpersonal Communication, Introduction to Visual Communication, Communication Theory, Introduction to Research Methods, Audio and Video Production, Online Content Production, Ethical Practice and Portfolio, Communication Law I, and Advanced Research Methods, along with six credits of English courses including Analysis and Argument and an additional three credits chosen from Approaches to Literature: Trends and Traditions, Narrative Across Media, or Contemporary Literature and Culture. Breadth requirements consist of 24 to 27 credits, including at least three credits of Indigenous-related coursework, ensuring students gain a broad, culturally informed perspective. The Professional Communication major requires 24 credits of major courses and offers specialization in Editing and Publishing, Strategic Communications, or Technical Communications. Students also complete 12 to 18 credits in a chosen minor and 18 to 24 credits of elective options, allowing interdisciplinary exploration and personalized study. This structure develops advanced analytical, research, and professional communication skills, preparing graduates to effectively convey information, influence audiences, and enhance organizational effectiveness across diverse industries.
