COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Communication Studies with a Journalism major requires students to complete a total of 120 credits, integrating core, breadth, major, minor, and option requirements to provide a comprehensive education in communication and journalism. The 36-credit core curriculum includes foundational courses in grammar and composition, interpersonal and visual communication, communication theory, audio and video production, research methods, online content production, ethical practice, communication law, and advanced research methods, along with six credits of English courses, ensuring students develop strong analytical, writing, and technical skills. Students also complete 24 to 27 credits of breadth requirements, including at least three credits of Indigenous-related coursework, fostering broader cultural awareness and critical thinking across disciplines. The Journalism major itself requires 24 credits of specialized courses designed to build expertise in reporting, investigative techniques, digital storytelling, and media ethics, providing practical skills and theoretical knowledge necessary for professional journalism. Students may also complete 12 to 18 credits in a chosen minor, allowing for interdisciplinary study and enhanced career flexibility, along with 18 to 24 credits of elective courses to tailor the degree to individual interests and professional goals. This combination ensures graduates are well-prepared to enter the journalism field with strong communication, research, and ethical decision-making abilities.
