COURSE CURRICULUM

The Child and Youth Care program requires students to complete 120 credits of coursework designed to develop the knowledge, skills, and practical experience necessary to support children, youth, and families facing complex challenges. In the first year, students build foundational skills through courses such as Adolescent Development, Helping Skills, Introduction to Practicum, Therapeutic Activities, and Child and Youth Care Practice, alongside university-level English, preparing them for direct work with children, youth, and families. The second year expands on these foundations with courses in Child/Youth Care Methods, Supporting Mental Health, Group Work, Family Systems and Dynamics, and additional practicums, focusing on therapeutic interventions, development across the lifespan, and family support strategies. In the third year, students engage with courses such as Global Perspectives, Child and Youth Care Research, Quantitative Analysis, Applying Developmental Theory to Practice, Social Justice with Children, Youth, and Families, Law and Social Services, and Abuse and Neglect, complemented by university electives and English courses, emphasizing research, social justice, and applied theory. The fourth year emphasizes advanced practice, linking theory, self-reflection, and ethics, with specialized courses in Addictions and Recovery, Advanced Practice with Individuals, Families, and Community Groups, and two practicums, alongside university electives, providing comprehensive hands-on experience and preparing graduates to work effectively in diverse settings, advocate for children and youth, and apply evidence-informed interventions to promote well-being and resilience.
