COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in English Honours provides students with a comprehensive and rigorous study of English literature, designed for those seeking an in-depth understanding of literary forms, periods, and cultural contexts. The program begins with foundational courses in analysis and argument, as well as approaches to literature across trends, narratives, and contemporary works, establishing critical reading and writing skills. Students then explore literary theory, methods of literary study, and complete an Honours thesis seminar, culminating in a self-directed research project under faculty supervision that develops advanced research, analytical, and scholarly communication abilities. The curriculum offers breadth and depth through courses in forms and approaches such as short stories, novels, poetry, and literary non-fiction, and surveys and histories covering British, American, and Canadian literature from early medieval to contemporary periods. Additional courses focus on identities and regions, including readings in race, gender, intersectionality, Indigenous literature, post-colonial studies, and world literature. Students further refine their expertise through senior-level English courses and may integrate creative writing credits. The program also allows exploration of elective courses or a minor from Arts, Science, or out-of-faculty options, providing flexibility while ensuring a total of 120 credits. Graduates leave with strong critical thinking, research, and communication skills, prepared for careers in writing, publishing, education, research, and graduate studies.
