COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Sociology Major provides students with a thorough understanding of human society, social interactions, and the diverse factors that shape individual and group experiences, including race, class, gender, and age. Core courses include Introductory Sociology (SOCI 100), Introduction to Social Research Methods (SOCI 215), Classical and Contemporary Sociological Theory (SOCI 232 and 333), and research-focused courses such as Introduction to Social Statistics or Introduction to Qualitative Research Methods (SOCI 310 or 318). Beyond these foundational courses, students complete 27 to 45 credits of junior- or senior-level sociology courses, allowing for specialized study in areas of interest and the development of advanced analytical and research skills. The program also provides flexibility for students to pursue a secondary Arts or Science major or one or two minors, with minor courses completed at the senior level, enhancing interdisciplinary knowledge. Additionally, students may choose up to 18 credits of courses outside the faculty to broaden their academic experience. By combining theoretical understanding with empirical research training, the Sociology Major equips graduates with critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills, preparing them for careers in social research, public policy, community development, education, and other fields that require insight into human behavior and social structures. The program emphasizes both academic rigor and practical applicability, fostering socially aware and analytically skilled professionals.
