COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy at MacEwan University provides a comprehensive program designed to develop critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and effective communication skills through the study of foundational and contemporary philosophical ideas. Students complete a series of Philosophy Survey courses, covering both the History of Philosophy and Areas of Philosophy, which include subjects such as metaphysics, ethics, epistemology, philosophy of mind, and social and political philosophy, allowing them to engage deeply with diverse traditions and perspectives. Methodology courses, including Philosophical Writing and Analysis and Symbolic Logic, equip students with essential tools to analyze, evaluate, and construct arguments with clarity and rigor. The program also includes a Senior Seminar and at least one additional 400-level course, enabling students to synthesize knowledge, conduct advanced research, and present well-reasoned positions. Beyond specific major requirements, students choose 21 to 39 credits from junior- and senior-level philosophy courses, with the option to pursue a secondary major or one or two minors, further broadening their academic experience. Additionally, students can select up to 18 credits in Arts, Science, or out-of-faculty options, contributing to a well-rounded education. With a total of 120 credits, the Philosophy major fosters intellectual curiosity, ethical reasoning, and a capacity for independent thought, preparing graduates for diverse career paths, graduate studies, and meaningful contributions to society.
