COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in History major provides students with a comprehensive understanding of human experiences across time and place, fostering analytical and critical thinking skills that are applicable to a wide range of careers and advanced studies. Students begin with an introduction to historical study before exploring four key areas: Canadian history, pre-modern surveys, modern surveys, and methodology. In Canadian history, courses cover the nation’s development from its early periods to the present, while pre-modern and modern surveys examine European, British, American, and global historical developments, including political, economic, and cultural transformations. The methodology component emphasizes historical theory, research techniques, and analytical skills, equipping students to evaluate sources, construct evidence-based arguments, and communicate findings effectively. General major requirements allow students to choose additional junior- or senior-level history courses, including advanced 400-level options, and students may also incorporate related classics courses to broaden their perspective. Opportunities exist to complement the major with a second Arts or Science major, one or two minors, and elective courses both within and outside the faculty, enabling a customized academic experience. Altogether, the program cultivates informed, independent thinkers who are prepared for careers in public service, business, education, law, museum and library studies, and public policy, while also providing a solid foundation for graduate studies in history and related disciplines.
