COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in English Major provides students with a comprehensive foundation in literature, writing, and critical analysis, equipping them with the skills to interpret, evaluate, and create complex texts. The program begins with core courses such as Analysis and Argument and Approaches to Literature, which introduce students to literary trends, narrative forms, and contemporary cultural contexts. Students then explore a variety of forms and approaches, including the short story, novel, poetry, and literary non-fiction, alongside surveys of British, American, and Canadian literature, and studies focused on identities and regions such as race, gender, and intersectionality. Advanced courses further develop analytical and research skills through topics in literary theory, methods in literary study, and specialized studies of historical periods, from medieval to modern literature, as well as post-colonial and world literature. The program allows flexibility with electives, options, and the opportunity to complete a secondary major or one or two minors, fostering interdisciplinary learning and broad intellectual growth. With 120 total credits, students graduate with strong critical thinking, communication, and research skills, prepared for careers in writing, publishing, media, education, or for further studies in graduate programs, while gaining a rich understanding of literature’s cultural, historical, and artistic significance.
